Black Hunger and elizabeth mscurdy are pleased to present So Low/Gratis, an evening of experimental performance that requires total participation from all in attendance -- starting at the door with an active, non-monetary admission that nurtures the Black Hunger community. This participation will culminate in performers engaging with the audience to make their works a reality. Playing with the idea of Time-Based Art, four half-hour acts provide generative constraints for both performers and viewers alike.
Invite your crew.
We will all be present.
We will all be responsible.
Admission is a non-monetary donation: bring a prepared dish /
drink for the Free Bar, where everyone eats and drinks for free,
or offer a bag of unwanted clothing / household items for the
Free Boutique, where everyone shops for free.

Black Hunger is excited to present the first sound performance from the experimental music project Memory Smoker. Boise artists/musicians Luke Hayhurst, Benjamin Mulkey and Alex Sprague create music self-described as "abdominal sub frequencies" that resonate an unearthliness. Entirely synthesized, Memory Smoker's compositions are improvised as the members respond to one another, creating a unique performance that should not be missed.
You can listen to an excerpt from the Memory Smoker performance at Memory Smoker's Bandcamp.

Black Hunger Gallery is excited to present new work by Idaho-based artist Amanda Hamilton. The exhibition will include select pieces from her body of work The Middle Distance.
A multimedia artist working in painting, drawing, sculpture and film, Hamilton’s recent project, The Middle Distance, takes a texturally rich approach to the exploration and representation of experiencing the otherness within the natural world. The Black Hunger installation, comprised of sculpture and film, brings form to the expanded moment between the patch of familiar and the mass of foreign where perception proves tentative and porous.

For the month of September 2012, Black Hunger Gallery is pleased to present Proposal for the Rotation of Lewis and Clark, an exhibition by Los Angeles-based, conceptual artist Gala Porras-Kim. Proposal for the Rotation of Lewis and Clark serves to draw attention to the emphasis of aesthetic considerations when making art and how these choices may lead to a misrepresentation of the meaning of the work. Through proposals to different government offices, Porras-Kim requests the rotation of a series of sculptures of Lewis and Clark along the Oregon Trail. The rotation would orient the sculptures to point west and allow the physical monuments to match the history they aim to commemorate. The installation consists of graphic and written documentation of the correspondence between the artist and the government agencies.

May 2012, Black Hunger Gallery presents One Picture Show: Stephen Eichhorn, the first of an exhibition series to focus on a singular work of art by an emerging artist we find to be compelling and influential. Eichhorn, a Chicago-based artist, creates beautiful hand-cut paper collages that operate in a new reality by abstracting the familiar in order to construct unearthly phenomena derived from his own visual language. His domestic structures slip into the strange manifested by the reassembling of elements into conceptual forms that are natural, yet bizarre. ___________________________________________________________________________

-For the month of February 2012 Bricolage and Black Hunger will host simultaneous exhibitions of Elijah Jensen's Dying Letter Office. D.L.O. is an informal postal exchange of creative ideas, objects and artifacts between members. Jensen is the founder, the instigator, the curator and an active participant. His project started as an instructed correspondence between friends as a way to physically share ideas and revitalize an outdated mode of communication. Since its inception, D.L.O. has grown to over 100 members nationwide. The body of work is indescribably complex; its richness and depth must be witnessed to be fully appreciated. The exhibition reflects the nascent stages of the project and, at the same time, reveals the unpredictable trajectory shaped by the reciprocity of members. Given the large volume, there were two concurrent shows running: Part One at Bricolage and Part Two at Black Hunger.

ELIZA FERNAND + QUILT STORIES
------ t h e m u s i c a l ------
The evening of January 23, 2012 Black Hunger presents a rare opportunity to see Eliza Fernand perform QUILT STORIES in musical form. This past summer and fall, Eliza drove across the country with her quilted tent, collecting stories and anecdotes about quilts in twenty-five cities and towns; from Washington, to Massachusetts, to Texas, and back. After recording over 100 MP3's of personal stories, she is deconstructing the audio and piecing the collected words into song lyrics. The result, for now, is an evolving performance with sculpture, video, and song.

On January 7, 2012 Black Hunger presents Broken Puppy, a conceptual installation centered on the significance of a single Jeff Koons sculpture previously damaged in shipping. The sculpture, on loan from a private collection, was curated specifically for its history. The visible misfortune provides a humorous perspective on precious art objects, with the intention of provoking dialog about the value and longevity of contemporary art. Broken Puppy will be on display for the night of the reception only.

Le Ramrod is Black Hunger's first solo exhibition of work by Tenspeed Hero (Jonathan Sadler, Luke Batten, Todd Simeone and Ben Gill). Tenspeed Hero, an artistic collaboration of cycling aficionados based in Chicago, started as a humble blog created by Batten and Sadler as a diversion from their artist project New Catalogue and has become an art/design entity in its own right. Le Ramrod exhibits the physical realization of their unshakable fascination with the culture of cycling.
